Born in 1945 in Korchunok village Rogatyn Ivano-Frankivsk region. He graduated from Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (1972). Teachers: M. Kurilich, A. Ostrovsky, M. Vendzilovich, S.Batig. Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
His sculptures are in private collections in Ukraine, Austria, Poland, Germany, Great Britain, USA and Canada. He creates in the field of religious art, painting and sculpture.
Most sculptors have a favorite material and for Michael Kostiv such material is wood. Even in his youth he mastered the craft of the engraver, and his sculptures suggest the perfect skill and high culture of wood processing.
Art critic Dmitry Gorbachev said that in his work Michael Kostiv drawn to modernism of the early twentieth century, and on the stylistic features of his plastic language can be called an inspired follower of Alexander Archipenko.
